What is BARF?
BARF is a nutritional philosophy based on the idea that dogs, as carnivores, should be fed in the same manner as when they were first domesticated, with the food of their wolf ancestors, with whom they share virtually the same genetic code. Breeding and selection have resulted in numerous dog breeds, so different from one another that it is sometimes hard to believe that they are the same species and that they have the same ancestor, the wolf. Based on this nutritional philosophy, the food should be RAW AND WITHOUT HARMFUL ADDITIVES FOUND IN OTHER TYPES OF DIET, as can be inferred from the name – Biologically Appropriate Raw Food.
The dog has been with man for 15,000 years and, although it has adapted its behavior and habits to coexist with humans, it is safe to say, considering the difference in genes of 0.001%, that the dog is actually a domesticated wolf (Thalmann, 2014).
