The Influence of Nutrition on Kidney Diseases in Dogs

If your dog has been diagnosed with kidney disease, do not condemn him to dehydrated food from a bag that says it is ideal food for kidney patients. To begin with, it is definitely important for kidney patients to be well hydrated. It is important that they also take water into their bodies through food, because dogs have a much weaker sense of thirst than humans. So the very fact that it is dehydrated food is already against the needs of the body. Dogs with kidney diseases must eat fresh food, because fresh meat contains about 70% water.

The importance of proteins in the diet of dogs Proteins are an extremely important ingredient in food for kidney patients. And although it is a common opinion that food should have a reduced amount of protein, this is only necessary in dogs whose disease is already advanced. So in those dogs that are uremic and as a result feel nauseous, vomit, are lethargic and lose their appetite. In the initial phase of the disease, it is important to ensure an optimal amount of high-quality, easily digestible proteins. High-quality protein contains various amino acids in the approximate amounts necessary for building proteins in the body of an individual. The 'ideal protein' would contain the exact amount of different amino acids that will be used to build the body's proteins without by-products (without excess amino acids that the body - the liver and kidneys have to excrete from the body). Proteins of animal origin such as proteins of meat, eggs, dairy products are much closer to the 'ideal protein' than proteins of plant origin. It is also important to say that certain amino acids, such as taurine, are sensitive to heat treatment. Raw food, especially red meat and heart, are extremely rich in taurine and therefore have an advantage over cooked meat.

How to dose phosphorus intake through diet? In order to slow down the progression of kidney diseases, it is necessary to limit the intake of phosphorus in the diet. Foods rich in phosphorus are:

  • bones,
  • dairy products,
  • fish (together with bones),
  • offal,
  • yolk.

These foods do not need to be completely eliminated from the diet. They are essential for a balanced, varied meal, but they should be used in moderation. An excellent food choice is green beef rumen - Von BARF Sesitive. Beef rumen contains high-quality, easily digestible proteins and is low in phosphorus. In addition, it contains chlorophyll, a green plant pigment that helps detoxify the body. Depending on the stage of the disease, Von BARF Sensitive can be combined with other Von BARF products and fresh foods. Eggs are an easily available and cheap source of high-quality protein, it is recommended to use the white (it is ideal to boil it slightly), the whole egg can only be given occasionally because the yolk contains a lot of phosphorus. But don't throw away the eggshell. The shell can be dried, ground and used as a substitute for calcium, if you had to deprive your dog of bones due to his kidney condition.
