INGREDIENTS
SARDINE
The Adriatic sardine is a high-quality oily fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and biotin.
Fats are a source of energy, but they have other benefits as well. They are important for building cell membranes, they help with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, control hormones, act as chemical messengers and play a major role in regulating inflammatory responses.
When it comes to omega-3 fatty acids, their most important role is to regulate inflammatory responses.
Omega-6 fatty acids tend to induce inflammatory response, which is essential to trigger the body’s immune response, whereas omega-3 fatty acids have the opposite effect, they reduce the inflammatory response, which is essential in managing chronic diseases and allergic reactions. The optimal ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids triggers the appropriate immune response.
Biotin is a B-complex vitamin, also known as vitamin H.
It is important for normal growth and muscle development, it plays a role in metabolic processes and energy production, in regulating thyroid function, adrenal gland and reproductive organs, and it is also very important for healthy skin and coat.
BEEF
Beef is sourced from the highest quality meat suppliers. The quality of our human-grade meat is controlled by veterinary inspection.
Heart – a rich source of coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant that prevents cellular decay. It is essential for the protection of the cardiovascular system and prevention of heart and cardiovascular system diseases.
The heart is also a source of minerals – selenium, zinc and phosphorus, as well as of essential amino acids. Although bovine heart is most commonly classified as beef (muscle), it is much richer in collagen and elastin – connective substances essential for joint health.
Liver – a rich source of vitamin A, essential fatty acids, folic acid, vitamin B complex, especially vitamin B 12, and iron.
It is important to emphasize that the liver filters toxins, but does not store them. Muscle tissue usually contains more toxins than the liver.
BONES
Bones are the best source of minerals for dogs. When minerals come from bones there is no fear of unfavourable calcium to phosphorus ratio because the body will absorb the minerals it needs, and the excess of minerals will be left undigested and eliminated from the body.
Besides as a source of minerals, bones are also important for optimal stool consistency, which supports the natural emptying of the anal glands.
Ground cartilage is a rich natural source of nutrients important for joint health (glucosamine, chondroitin).
Glucosamine is a proteoglycan (glucose + amino acid glutamine), which is highly concentrated in connective tissue. It is essential for the synthesis of larger molecules that keep joints healthy, i.e. well lubricated and mobile. It is important in the treatment and prevention of joint injuries, osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint diseases.
Chondroitin is a complex carbohydrate found in human and animal connective tissue. It keeps the cartilage healthy by binding water molecules (it creates synovial fluid that feeds and lubricates joint cartilage and ligaments), by blocking enzymes that break down cartilage and by encouraging chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to synthesize collagen and proteoglycan.
VEGETABLES
Seasonal fruits and vegetables (leafy greens, carrots, apples) are used as a source of vitamins and minerals, phytonutrients that play an important antioxidant role and raw fibres that have a mechanical role – they promote peristalsis of the intestine and the growth of good microflora in the intestine (prebiotic properties).
MEDITERRANEAN HERBS
Oregano
Due to its antioxidant properties oregano strengthens the body’s immune system. It contains rosmarinic acid known for its high antioxidant activity. Dog’s organism is certainly able to survive without rosmarinic acid, but its positive effects on the neutralization of harmful metabolic by-products certainly contribute to their better overall health.
Oregano is also dubbed as a natural antibiotic; it has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic properties. It is often used in alternative medicine to treat digestive issues, diarrhoea and bloating.
Basil
Basil has antioxidant properties – it protects cell membranes from free radical damage. It is therefore used in treating some types of cancer, heart diseases and arthritis, as well as other age-related diseases (cellular decay). Basel has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and it is thus recommended for dogs in the early stages of arthritis instead of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Mild sedative properties will help dogs with motion sickness and scared dogs (thunder, fireworks, etc.)
Sage
Sage has numerous healing benefits. Hippocrates himself wondered: “How can a man die who has sage in his garden?“. This plant is extremely beneficial for dogs as well.
Astringent properties of sage relieve skin irritations and the rosmarinic acid it contains helps in relieving the symptoms of seasonal allergies. Sage’s anti-inflammatory properties help alleviate the pain caused by arthritic changes in joints. Sage can also be used to reduce intestinal bloating and cramps and to treat intestinal infections in general because it has antibacterial and antiviral, as well as analgesic properties.
NO PRESERVATIVES
NO PRESERVATIVES, artificial colours, flavour enhancers, pesticides and other additives commonly found in dog food.
NO CROSSED OUT GRAINS
Grain-free, starch-free.
FEEDING GUIDE
It is simple and safe to feed VON BARF ADRIATIC to your dog. The amount of food needed for one meal should be thawed and served at room temperature. This food must not be exposed to high temperatures, cooked or heated in the microwave.
Once defrosted, BARF can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When taken out of the fridge, meal should be served only after reaching room temperature.
NUMBER AND SIZE OF MEALS
It is recommended to feed VON BARF ADRIATIC once a week.
Why once a week and not daily?
We are inclined to think that a meal should be monoprotein (i.e. contain only one type of meat). Sardines are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, minerals and it would be a shame not to offer it your dog once a week. As even a weekly requirement for sardines is low, we have mixed it with beef.
Meal size depends on dog’s weight, activity and age. The recommended amount for feeding is 2-5% of dog’s body weight per day; for an adult dog this is usually 2% of their body weight.
It is recommended to weigh the dog before switching to BARF and then 2 – 3 weeks later. Depending on what you want to achieve (maintain the same weight, weight loss, weight increase), adjust the serving size accordingly.
